American composer Nancy Galbraith (b. 1951) has spent most of her life in Pittsburgh, where she is Chair of Composition and Vira I Heinz Professor of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. She was also born and raised in Pittsburgh, taking advantage of many opportunities for young musicians there. Her composition studies took her to Ohio University and West Virginia University before she returned to Carnegie Mellon for post-graduate work, and eventually to her faculty role. She has written over 150 pieces covering a wide variety of ensembles and solo instruments. Her music for wind band has been performed and recorded around the world.
Galbraith wrote Audible Images in 2014 on a commission from the North Hills High School Bands and their conductor Len Lavelle. It is a lively piece that uses many of Galbraith’s signature post-minimalist techniques. Have a listen:
